Canada's travel and tourism sector is expected to experience labour shortages this year, according to a recently updated study by the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council. If you love travel, now is a good time to make a career of it. In just six months, you could be certified to work in:
· Hotel Management
· Resort Management
· Event Planning
Picture yourself behind the desk in a world-class hotel or travelling the seas with a cruise line. Or leading activities at a resort or dealing blackjack in an onboard casino. Sound intriguing? It's within reach. Read on for more information on what to look for in a school.
How to Choose a Travel & Tourism School
There are different points to consider before committing to a school.
Does the school have a co-op program that would give you an immediate chance to apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom to real-life situations?
Does it offer the internationally recognized American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) certification? This makes it easier for you to find work outside of the country (Canada is not the only country experiencing or expected to experience labour shortages in the hospitality industry. Australia, for example, is also reportedly experiencing a labour shortfall.
Does it offer paid work experience? This gives you a chance to practice what you've learned in a professional setting - while making money!
Do its hospitality management and travel & tourism programs feature additional training in such topics as: cultural sensitivity, emergency first aid, leadership skills, stress management, etc?
Does it offer career development services? A good school will guide students towards domestic and international job opportunities in the travel & tourism sectors.
There are also different programs to choose from:
· Travel & Tourism Diploma
· Travel & Tourism Business Management Diploma
· Travel Agent Certificate
· Hotel Management Diploma
· Hospitality Resort Management Diploma
Whatever your dream travel job - an event planner, tour guide or chef on a cruise line - the best way to make your decision about training programs is to contact a school and start asking questions. Has the school kept in contact with its graduates? What kind of jobs have they found? How soon can you start?
Your love of travel just may translate into an exciting new career. The travel and tourism sector is an industry that needs workers and will give you endless opportunities to increase your understanding of the world. Take a look - it could be the career for you! Bon voyage!
